Religious Community Services (RCS) addresses the basic needs of the community by providing food, clothing, and shelter to those who need it most. Primary programs include the soup kitchen, clothing closet, and homeless shelter, but RCS has many other programs to offer help, including: Transportation assistance, rent and utility assistance, enrichment programs, and food pantry.

RCS is special to Trade Ideas Founder Shannon LuQuire. She began volunteering for the faith-based organization when she was just 12 and, one could say, she never stopped.

Her work with RCS began simply—she was tasked with updating the logo and giving a few new design elements to the website and other printed material. Over the years our has expanded greatly. RCS now relies on Trade Ideas to do so much more. We keep the mission of the group in the minds of the citizens of Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties through monthly newsletters and social media content, helping double annual donations to RCS since we began our marketing efforts.

In addition to maintaining and updating a dynamic website, we manage and run several fundraising events including:

Empty Bowls, a joint outreach of RCS and the Craven Arts Council & Gallery, is a project designed to fight hunger and help support the Arts Council. Local restaurants and churches make, serve, and donate soup and bread for the event; and individuals and local artists donate pottery, baskets, and paintings. Attendees eat delicious soup in a one-of-a-kind piece of art of their choosing.

The Mail Carrier Food Drive, sponsored by the United States Postal Service, encourages residents in Craven County to leave canned goods by the mailbox in bags. A mail carrier (or RCS volunteer) will pick up these canned goods and deliver them to the Food Pantry at RCS. In 2016, New Bern residents donated over 32,000 pounds of food!

The Neuse River Bridge Run has grown significantly over the years to be one of the premiere races in North Carolina. Thousands of runners and walkers participate in this run that offers a 5K, 10K, and half marathon. A portion of the proceeds raised at this event benefits RCS.

Sledding, Shopping, and Food Drive Sunday (sponsored by Beary Merry Christmas), brings a fun afternoon of sledding, bouncing, and arts and crafts for the kids. Guests are encouraged to bring food donations for RCS and/or make a monetary contribution to help others during the Christmas season. All proceeds from the sale of hot chocolate and cookies come back to RCS.
